The Places I Still Look for You

I said I did not want to see you anymore.

I said it with the kind of pride people wear when they are already breaking. I said it like a door closing. Like a final page turning. Like I had found some courage buried beneath all the wreckage you left inside me. I said it because I thought distance could save me. Because I thought if I removed you from my life, my heart would learn how to stop reaching for you.

But the truth is, I still search for you everywhere I go.

In crowded streets. In passing cars. In the shape of strangers from behind. In laughter that sounds almost like yours, but not enough to save me. I search for you in doorways, in cafés, in windows lit up at night. I search for you in songs I should not play anymore, in places we never went together, in people who have nothing to do with you.

It is humiliating, really, the way the heart refuses to obey the mouth.

My lips said, go.
My soul whispered, come back.

And I hate that part of me. The part that still turns its head too quickly when someone looks like you. The part that still wonders where you are, who you are with, whether your hands have forgotten the shape of me. The part that pretends it is healing while quietly bleeding through every ordinary moment.

Because absence is not empty.

Absence is full of things.

It is full of unfinished conversations. Full of all the words I swallowed so I would not beg. Full of all the times I looked calm while something inside me was clawing at the walls. Full of all the versions of us that never got to live. Full of the love I had nowhere to put.

And maybe that is why I keep repeating the pain.

Because you repeat what you do not heal.

You return to the same wound, not because it feels good, but because it is familiar. Because your hands know the shape of it. Because grief, after a while, becomes a room you can walk through with your eyes closed. You know where every sharp edge is. You know which memories will cut you deepest. You know exactly which thought will ruin your whole night, and still, you touch it.

Still, you go back.

Back to the message you should have deleted.
Back to the photo you pretend you do not look at.
Back to the moment everything changed.
Back to the version of them that loved you better in your imagination than they ever did in real life.

And I have gone back so many times, I think part of me still lives there.

Part of me is still standing in the middle of what we lost, waiting for the dust to settle. Waiting for you to turn around. Waiting for the impossible to become merciful.

But the loneliest moment in a person’s life is not always the moment they are left.

Sometimes, it is the moment they realize no one is coming to save them from the ruins.

It is the moment they watch their whole world fall apart, and all they can do is stare blankly. Not scream. Not run. Not fight. Just stand there with their hands hanging at their sides, looking at the pieces of everything they believed in scattered across the floor.

There is a strange silence that comes after devastation.

A silence so heavy it feels almost alive.

You sit in it. You breathe through it. You look around at your own life and barely recognize it. The room is the same. The walls are the same. The light still enters through the window like nothing has happened. But inside you, something has collapsed so completely that even your own heartbeat sounds unfamiliar.

And no one sees it.

That is the cruelest part.

People pass you by. They ask how you are. You say you are fine because you do not have the language to explain that you are standing in the ashes of something sacred. You smile because it is easier than saying, I am still grieving someone who is alive. I am still haunted by a love that has nowhere to go. I am still trying to survive the absence of a person I told myself I no longer needed.

So you keep moving.

You wake up. You get dressed. You answer messages. You drink water. You laugh at the right moments. You become a master at looking untouched while carrying an entire funeral beneath your skin.

But at night, the truth comes back.

It always does.

At night, there is no crowd to hide inside. No noise loud enough to drown out the ache. No performance left to maintain. Just you, the dark, and all the things you have been avoiding.

That is when I miss you the most.

Not loudly. Not desperately. Not in a way that would make anyone turn their head.

I miss you quietly.

Like a candle burning in an empty church.
Like a letter never sent.
Like a name pressed into the mouth but never spoken.

I miss you in the space beside me. In the silence after a song ends. In the mornings when I wake up and remember, all over again, that you are not part of my life anymore. I miss you in the smallest, stupidest places. The kind of places grief should not be able to reach, but somehow does.

And maybe healing is not about pretending I never loved you.

Maybe healing is not saying your name without feeling anything.

Maybe healing is standing in the truth without letting it destroy me.

The truth is, I wanted you to stay.

The truth is, I still look for you.

The truth is, I said I did not want to see you anymore because seeing you and not having you was killing me in ways I did not know how to explain.

And maybe that was not hatred.

Maybe that was survival.

Maybe I was not pushing you away because I stopped caring. Maybe I was pushing you away because every time you came close, I forgot how to choose myself. Maybe I was tired of being the only one drowning in something we both had touched. Maybe I needed to leave before my love turned into a place where I disappeared completely.

But still, even now, some part of me betrays me.

Some part of me keeps listening for your footsteps in a life you no longer walk through.

Some part of me keeps mistaking strangers for a miracle.

And I do not know how to forgive myself for that yet.

I do not know how to stop loving someone just because they hurt me. I do not know how to pull a whole person out of my chest without taking pieces of myself with them. I do not know how to grieve cleanly. I only know how to bleed quietly and call it healing because at least I am still here.

Still breathing.

Still trying.

Still standing in the middle of the wreckage, even when my hands are empty and my heart is tired.

And perhaps that is where the worst of it begins.

Not in forgetting.

Not in healing.

Not in learning how to live without them.

But in finally looking at the ruins and understanding that they are not something I survived.

They are what I became.

You were once everywhere.

Now you are only in the places that hurt when touched.

In the silence after a door closes.
In the empty side of the bed.
In the crowd where my eyes still betray me.
In every stranger who almost looks like you.
In every street that has no reason to remember you, and still does.

And I know now that some wounds do not close.

Some loves do not leave.

Some people are not removed from the heart. They rot there. Quietly. Deeply. Like something buried alive beneath the ribs.

One day, maybe, I will walk through a crowd and not search for your face.

But not today.

Today, I still look.

Today, I still turn my head too quickly.

Today, I still mistake shadows for mercy.

And every time it is not you, something inside me falls apart again. Not loudly. Not dramatically. Just enough to remind me that I have not moved on. I have only learned how to carry the collapse without making a sound.

I keep returning to the wound because it is the only place where you still feel close.

I keep pressing my fingers into the ache because pain is the last language your absence left me.

And maybe that is the cruelest part of loving someone who is gone but not dead.

There is no grave to kneel beside.

No final goodbye.

No clean ending.

Only a world that continues without them, while some part of you remains trapped in the exact moment they became unreachable.

So I stand here, staring blankly at all that has fallen apart.

Not waiting for it to be rebuilt.

Not hoping for light to enter.

Not pretending there is some beautiful lesson waiting beneath the wreckage.

There is no lesson.

There is only the ruin.

There is only the silence.

There is only me, standing in the middle of what used to be my heart, unable to recognize anything but the shape of your absence.

And though I said I did not want to see you anymore, the truth is more humiliating than that.

I wanted to stop needing to.

I wanted to stop searching.

I wanted to become someone your ghost could not follow.

But I am not that person.

I am still here.

Still looking.

Still haunted.

Still reaching for a face that will not appear.

And maybe this is how some stories end.

Not with closure.

Not with healing.

Not with a heart becoming whole again.

But with a person standing among the ruins, finally understanding that nothing is coming back.

Not them.

Not the world before them.

Not the version of me that existed before I loved them.

Only the ache remains.

Only the wreckage.

Only the terrible, endless knowing that I told you to leave because I could not survive loving you,

and somehow,

your absence destroyed me anyway.

the comfort of disappearing

August 17, 2026

The Comfort of Disappearing A haunting confession about craving the silence that once helped you escape yourself, fearing the comfort that nearly erased you, and wondering whether disappearing again would mean never finding your way back. I feel hollow in a way that is difficult to explain without making it sound smaller than it is. It is not an emptiness exactly, because emptiness would mean there is nothing...

to know me is to leave

To Know Me Is to Leave A haunting confession about abandonment, childhood wounds, and learning to survive the ruins of a life that broke too early. To know me is to leave. That is the first thing you should understand about me. People do not always leave immediately. Some of them stay long enough to make me believe they might be different. They sit beside me and ask...
