What Darkness Allows It is 1 a.m., and the world has gone quiet enough for my thoughts to become dangerous. There is something cruel about this hour. Something too honest. During the day, I can pretend I belong to ordinary things. I can answer messages. I can smile at the right moments. I can place my hands around a cup of coffee and act as if they are...
Why Did We Have to End Like This?
A midnight letter about heartbreak, unanswered endings, and the ache of losing someone without understanding why.
Oh… my love.
Why did it have to end like this?
I ask myself that question as if the answer is still hiding somewhere inside the wreckage. As if, if I dig deep enough through the broken pieces of us, I might find the exact moment everything began to break. The word I said too softly. The silence I held for too long. The day I reached for you instead of waiting for you to reach for me. The night I begged. The morning I should have left.
But all I find is ruin.
All I find is my own heart, still standing in the middle of what we used to be, calling your name like a prayer that no longer has a god to answer it.
I keep speaking to you in my head because there is nowhere else left for my love to go. It has no home now. No hands to fall into. No chest to rest against. No future to imagine without hurting itself. So it circles back to me. It fills my throat. It sits behind my eyes. It makes a room inside my body and refuses to leave.
And I hate that I still call you my love.
Even now.
Even after everything.
Even after the ending made a stranger out of you and a ruin out of me.
I keep wondering if it was me. If I was too much. Too emotional. Too afraid. Too wounded. Too desperate to be chosen. I wonder if I held you with hands that trembled too badly. I wonder if I asked for love in a way that sounded like a burden. I wonder if my fear of losing you became the very thing that pushed you away.
Should I have been quieter?
Should I have needed less?
Should I have swallowed more of my pain so you could love me more easily?
I replay myself over and over until I become unbearable even to my own memory. I question every version of me that loved you, and somehow every version looks guilty. The one who stayed. The one who cried. The one who forgave. The one who waited. The one who kept hoping that if I loved you gently enough, patiently enough, completely enough, you would finally understand what you meant to me.
But maybe that was the saddest part.
Maybe you did understand.
Maybe you knew.
Maybe you saw the way I was breaking myself just to remain near you, and still, you let me.
I do not know which truth hurts more.
That you never saw how much I loved you, or that you saw it and it still was not enough to make you stay.
I keep asking myself if it was us. If some loves are born already wounded. If some people are meant to find each other only to become evidence of what pain can do when it wears the face of someone beautiful. Maybe we were never a promise. Maybe we were only a lesson I refused to learn. Maybe we were always standing at the edge of an ending, and I was the only one pretending it was a beginning.
But I wanted us to survive.
God, I wanted us to make it, together.
I wanted to believe that love could be enough if it was honest. If it was deep. If it was loyal. If it stayed even when staying hurt. I wanted to believe that what we had could be saved because I could still feel it breathing somewhere beneath the damage. I thought if I kept holding on, if I kept choosing you, if I kept placing my heart in your hands even after you had already bruised it, then maybe we would find our way back.
But love does not always save.
Sometimes love is the thing that keeps you standing in a burning house because you remember how warm it used to be before it became fire.
And I stayed.
I stayed long after something inside me knew I should have left. I stayed because leaving felt like killing the last living part of us. I stayed because I could not bear the thought of a world where I no longer belonged to you in some small, secret way. I stayed because every time I imagined walking away, my heart turned around and ran back to the place that hurt it.
Was that devotion?
Or was it weakness?
Was I loving you?
Or was I abandoning myself in your name?
I do not know anymore.
That is what you left me with. Not only heartbreak, but confusion. Not only grief, but questions with teeth. Questions that wake beside me. Questions that follow me into every quiet room. Questions that sit across from me at night and whisper, maybe you ruined it. Maybe you could have saved it. Maybe if you had been better, softer, easier, less broken, less afraid, they would have loved you differently.
And the worst part is that I listen.
I listen because some part of me still thinks I deserve the blame. Some part of me still wants to protect you from the cruelty of what happened by turning all the sharp edges toward myself. I make excuses for you even now. I tell myself you were tired. You were hurt. You did not know how to love me. You did not mean to destroy me.
But then I look at what is left of me.
And I wonder how unintentional a wound can be before it stops mattering.
Because I am still bleeding.
I am still carrying the ending in my body like something that never learned how to leave. There are days I feel almost normal until some small, merciless thing brings you back. A song. A place. A word you used to say. A memory that slips through the cracks and presses its mouth against my ear.
And suddenly I am there again.
Back inside the ache.
Back inside the last look.
Back inside the silence that came after us.
I wish I could hate you. I think it would make this easier. Hate has somewhere to go. Hate can stand. Hate can speak. Hate can slam doors and burn photographs and swear it never cared. But love… love just sits there, wounded and loyal, looking at the person who broke it and still remembering them tenderly.
That is what destroys me.
I still remember you tenderly.
Even when I should not.
Even when the memory of you cuts through me.
Even when I know that missing you is just another way of touching the blade.
I miss the person I thought you were. I miss the version of us I carried in my mind. I miss the future I built out of your smallest kindnesses. I miss the way I once believed we were something that could not be easily undone. I miss feeling safe inside the thought of you, before that thought became the place I go to suffer.
Do you know what it is like to grieve someone who is still alive?
To mourn a love that did not die all at once, but slowly, piece by piece, until one day you looked down and realized you had been standing in a grave you helped dig?
Because that is what this feels like.
It feels like burying us with my bare hands.
It feels like holding the dirt and still hoping something will bloom from it.
It feels like loving a ghost that still has a body somewhere in the world, breathing, laughing, moving on, while I remain here with all the things we never became.
And I wonder if you feel it too.
I wonder if there are moments when my name crosses your mind and something inside you pauses. I wonder if you ever reach for your phone and remember there is nothing left to say. I wonder if you ever think about the way I loved you and feel the weight of it. Not enough to come back. Not enough to apologize. Not enough to undo anything.
Just enough to know.
Just enough to understand that someone once stood before you with their whole heart in their hands, and you let them break while holding it.
But maybe I am foolish for wondering.
Maybe I am still trying to make myself matter in a story where I was only temporary.
Maybe you have already made peace with what destroyed me.
That thought is its own kind of death.
Because while I am still trapped inside the ending, you might have already walked out of it. While I am still choking on the words we never said, you might have already learned how to breathe without me. While I am still asking why, you might not even be asking anything at all.
And how am I supposed to live with that?
How am I supposed to accept that what shattered me might have only saddened you?
How am I supposed to carry the knowledge that the love I could not survive losing was something you could survive leaving?
I think that is where the deepest pain lives.
Not in the fact that we ended.
But in the possibility that we ended differently for each of us.
For me, it was ruin.
For you, maybe it was just a door closing.
For me, it was the whole sky falling in.
For you, maybe it was a light breeze.
And I hate myself for still wanting to be wrong. I hate myself for wanting you to hurt too. Not because I want you ruined, but because I cannot bear the loneliness of being the only one destroyed by something we both held.
I wanted us to mean the same thing.
I wanted the loss to weigh the same in both our hands.
But maybe love is not fair like that.
Maybe one person can be the wound, and the other can simply be the one who leaves it behind.
I keep thinking about all the ways I might have saved us. I turn them over in my mind until they become impossible little prayers. Maybe if I had been less afraid. Maybe if I had trusted more. Maybe if I had not asked so many questions. Maybe if I had not needed reassurance. Maybe if I had not shown you the parts of me that were still aching from before you.
Maybe if I had been easier to love, you would have loved me better.
And I know how cruel that sounds.
I know I should not make a weapon out of my own heart and call it truth.
But pain is not always honest. Sometimes it lies in your own voice. Sometimes it wears your guilt like a familiar coat. Sometimes it convinces you that being abandoned means you must have been unworthy of being kept.
So I sit here, loving you, blaming myself, hating myself for blaming myself, and missing you through all of it.
There is no dignity in this kind of grief.
No clean shape to it.
No beautiful way to say that I am still broken over someone who is no longer here to see the damage.
I wanted to be stronger than this. I wanted to be the kind of person who could lose love and still remain whole. I wanted to walk away with my head high, with my hands steady, with my heart bruised but not destroyed. I wanted to say, it hurt, but I survived it.
But I do not feel like I survived.
I feel like I am still lying somewhere inside the moment you stopped choosing me.
I feel like time kept moving, but some part of me did not.
Some part of me is still there, still looking at you, still waiting for you to change your mind, still hoping that you will see what you are doing before it is too late.
But it is already too late.
Isn’t it?
That is the truth I cannot accept easily.
We are already over.
Whatever we were, whatever we almost became, whatever sacred and terrible thing lived between us… it is gone now. Or maybe it is not gone. Maybe it is worse than gone. Maybe it is still here, but only inside me. Maybe I am the only place where we still exist.
And that makes me feel so unbearably alone.
Because I do not just miss you.
I miss who I was before loving you became grief.
I miss the version of myself who believed that giving everything meant something. I miss the tenderness in me before it became fear. I miss the softness before it became a bruise. I miss the girl who loved you with open hands, before she learned that open hands can come back empty.
I do not know what to do with all this love now.
I do not know where to put it.
It is too heavy to carry and too loyal to abandon. It follows me from room to room. It waits beside me in the dark. It presses against my ribs like a second heart, beating only for someone who is gone.
And still, in my mind, I speak to you.
Oh… my love.
Why did it have to end like this?
Why did we have to become something I cannot remember without breaking?
Why did I give you the parts of me I did not know how to get back?
I wish I could say this pain has made me wiser. I wish I could turn it into something graceful. I wish I could stand in the ashes and say I am grateful for the fire because it taught me how to rise.
But I am not grateful.
I am not rising.
I am still burning.
And maybe that is the confession I have been too ashamed to make.
That I loved you so deeply, losing you did not feel like losing a person.
It felt like losing the place inside myself where hope used to live.
So no, I do not know if it was me.
I do not know if it was us.
I do not know if I held on too tightly or loved too long or broke myself trying to keep something that was already leaving.
All I know is that it ended.
All I know is that it broke me.
All I know is that somewhere inside me, I am still reaching for you with hands that have nothing left to hold.
And I might never come back from that ruin.
Not fully.
Not as I was.
Not as someone who can still believe that love does not always leave destruction behind.
Because you were my love.
And now you are my wound.
And I do not know how to stop calling you both.

Would You Notice Me? There are nights when the world grows too large around me. Not loud, not cruel, not even unkind – only vast. Terribly vast. The kind of vastness that does not shout its indifference, but simply exists, stretching out in every direction until the self begins to shrink inside its own body. Until hands feel small. Until the heart, ridiculous and trembling thing that it...
When You Look at Me, I See Her There are wounds that do not open with a sound. They do not split the skin, do not stain the sleeve, do not call anyone running from another room. They bloom quietly beneath the ribs, blue and private, like bruises made by hands that never touched the body. They arrive in a glance, in a pause too small for accusation,...
